About Longwood Sutlery

Longwood today

About the name...

Longwood Sutlery is named after our family's former plantation. Longwood was established in 1785 on a land grant from the King of Spain. Originally consisting of around 2000 acres, it grew to as much as 5000 acres at it's peak, around 1950. Primarily a sugar plantation, it also produced beef cattle, lumber, and cotton. During the War it was used to house a Union artillery battery since it sat at a sharp bend in the Mississippi River, a strategic point since any ships would have to greatly reduce speed to make the turn, increasing their vulnerability substantially.

About me....

I began reenacting over 40 years ago. During that time I have seen the hobby change immensely. The attention to historically correct and accurate kits has grown by leaps and bounds! Sadly, the hobby is not a cheap one, and many are kept from participating because of the costs involved. I fell into this sutlery pretty much by accident. I was making and selling cleaning jigs for muskets that could fit in the palm of your hand. This was pretty much done just for myself and personal friends, but began looking into selling to reenactors at large. It was at this time that I was approached by a uniform maker asking if I wanted to sell his wears as well. He sent me samples of his work. I was impressed with their quality and surprised at their affordability.

It was then that I decided to give it a go and see if I could provide my fellow reenactors with decent garments at an affordable price. I sold them on a well known auction site for a long time, but sales terms have changed so drastically (not for the better) that I decided to leave that area and pursue my own web store. We may not have as much selection or variety as some of the big guys, but I truly feel that what we have is good quality at a great price! Hopefully, y'all will agree!

Why Longwood Sutlery?

Five good reasons...

  1. Good quality. I refuse to sell anything that I myself wouldn't happily use in the field!

  2. Great price. I am confident that you'll be hard pressed to find this quality gear at a lower price.

  3. Fast Shipping. I only sell what I have on hand, ready to ship. No waiting 4-6 weeks to receive your goods. Buy from me and it's usually a maters of days.

  4. Superb customer care. I do my best to communicate clearly with my customers. I treat them like I want to be treated.

  5. Free Shipping. I sell only to the lower 48. (Who in tarnation would be doing Civil War reenactments in Alaska and Hawaii, anyway???) This keeps shipping simple, fast, and affordable. Therefore I can pass on those cost reductions on to you by offering free shipping.
